About the Project |
The nutria (Myocastor coypus), or coypu, is listed as a nuisance species in Virginia. The current distribution of nutria in Virginia is unknown. At minimum, nutria are considered established in an area bounded by the intersection of Route 13 and Interstate 264 south to the North Carolina state line and east to the Atlantic Ocean. The overall goal is to establish the current distribution of nutria in Virginia to support subsequent eradication activities. This will be accomplished by completing a number of tasks that will establish the current distribution of nutria in Virginia, implement a standard inter-agency and public reporting process for observations, and produce a report on the status of nutria in Virginia to guide future efforts to eradicate the species.
