The overall objective of this project was to support the revision of the Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP) at Tinker Air Force Base (TAFB) using fieldwork and GIS/GPS technologies. This overall objective was partially fulfilled through the complete census of Oklahoma penstemon populations. Oklahoma penstemon (Penstemon oklahomensis Pennell), or Oklahoma beardtongue, is endemic to Oklahoma and is a state-wide species of special concern. A total of 403 Oklahoma penstemon individuals were counted among the 30 newly defined 2006 colonies at Tinker AFB, with an average of 13 plants per colony. The highest number of plants found in a colony was 63. In general, the penstemon plants were scarce and polygons from previous years did not accurately represent the 2006 colonies. Oklahoma penstemon is an important species for continued monitoring since it is a state-wide species of special concern and endemic to Oklahoma. This species is a significant part of the native ecosystem at TAFB. Future monitoring of these colonies will give natural resource personnel quantitative information regarding changes in natural vegetation. This will in turn lead to better management decisions, insuring the continued survival of this rare species and associated rare communities.
